RMS' Living Luminizer and Master Mixer

The talent of a trend-setting brand is recognizing a nascent trend, or creating one, before anyone else does. That’s what rms beauty has done. It has a knack for creating products you didn't know you needed but suddenly realize you can’t live without.

Case in point: the rms living luminizer and rms master mixer. Both are cream-in-pot highlighters that can be used in the traditional way or mixed with other products to add a refined glow. As you can expect from everything reviewed on Keu, the ingredients are non-toxic and nourishing. All rms beauty products are certified organic, gluten free, non-GMO, soy free, non-nano and not tested on animals.

LIVING LUMINIZER

This has become my go-to highlighter. The color looks pearly-white inside the pot, but when applied to the skin it creates a sheer, dewy glow. The texture is equally sheer and light, never greasy or glittery.

The living luminizer is the best selling product in the uber popular rms beauty line, and for good reason: it has democratized the art of highlighting. No longer an intimidating skill that only makeup artists could master, highlighting the rms way is a quick and doable technique that every woman can confidently achieve. All you need is the little pot of living luminizer and your finger. It’s easy to apply and never looks obvious or overdone.

How To Use It
Apply with your fingers and dab onto the high planes of the face to add a natural glow:

  • over the cheekbones
  • down the bridge of the nose
  • on the brow bones
  • along the inner corners of eyes
  • on the cupid's bow of the lips
  • onto the center of the eyelids (just above the lashes)
  • down the middle of the legs, to elongate them and catch the light.

Why I Love the Ingredients

  • Rose-Marie Swift, the makeup artist and creator of her namesake rms, explains that “the whole line is based on raw coconut oil, so all the healing properties are intact. It’s really healthy makeup”.
  • rms’ coconut oil is extracted from fresh organic coconuts without the use of heat or chemical solvents - a process that preserves the naturally-occurring vitamin E, antioxidants and enzymes in the coconut oil.
  • Swift mixed the coconut oil with organic castor oil to give the formula staying power. Castor oil is a safe alternative to petroleum (vaseline) in cosmetics.
  • Also contains organic beeswax, vitamin E for antioxidant benefits, and organic rosemary which acts as a preservative.
  • The pearlescent sheen comes from the use of mica and a small amount of titanium dioxide. However, rms does not use nano particles or any minerals that may be of concern in their loose form, in order to avoid possible risks from the inhalation of loose minerals.

MASTER MIXER

Is there a girl out there who doesn’t love rose gold? It’s my absolute favorite color (or is it a shade?) The master mixer can transform any product with a universally flattering rose gold hue. During my green beauty makeover with Christine Jairamsingh (read it here), we mixed it with the living luminizer because the warmer tone of the master mixer balances the silvery-cool tone of the living luminizer. This turned out to be a beautiful combination: it created the perfect lit-from-within glow (an effect that rms is known for) that was so natural even I had to look closely to detect any highlighter on my face.

Not just a highlighter, the master mixer is a multipurpose cosmetic that can be mixed with your blush, bronzer, highlighter, eyeshadow or lipstick to create a unique shade and add glow. It blends equally well with powders and creams.

How To Use It
You apply the master mixer with your fingers and dab onto the high planes of the face to add a subtle, sexy gold shimmer:

  • over the cheekbones
  • down the bridge of the nose
  • on the brow bones
  • along the inner corners of eyes
  • on the cupid's bow of the lips
  • onto the center of the eyelids (just above the lashes)
  • down the middle of the legs, to elongate them and add a warm shimmer.

Note for fair skin types: if you have fair skin (like me) I would avoid using the master mixer as a highlighter. Instead of giving you the desired highlight effect it will actually make you look bronzed - which is not what you want on the areas where you’re trying to catch light. Rather, mix it with the living luminizer or use the living luminizer on its own. But if you have olive or darker skin, the master mixer will give you a gorgeous highlight effect on the cheekbones and other high planes of the face.

Why I Love the Ingredients

The master mixer contains most of the same ingredients as the living luminizer, except that it doesn’t contain castor oil and contains three additional ingredients:

  • jojoba seed oil, which is nearly identical to human skin oil and therefore easily absorbed and provides long-lasting moisture. Jojoba oil also soothes, heals and nourishes the skin because it contains vitamins B and E, antioxidants and zinc.
  • cocoa seed butter was added for its exceptional lubricating and emollient properties. It contains approximately 5 IU per ounce of vitamin E and effectively nourishes dry skin.
  • silica, in an amorphous form that’s safe and FDA-approved. This mineral has the ability to scatter light and seamlessly blur fine lines and wrinkles. It also controls oil and creates a freshly applied look even hours after application.

Whether used alone or mixed together, the living luminizer and master mixer will make you look fresh, youthful and radiant. Even if you’re someone who’s intimidated by the idea of highlighting, you’ll be surprised by how easy it is to swipe your finger into one of these pots and blend onto the skin.
