Mom-in-a-Rush Beauty

My mornings always feel like a mad scramble to get out the door. On some days, all I have time for is sunscreen and a ponytail. But I try not to be so minimal. When I’m put together I feel better prepared to tackle my day. It’s like when your home is tidy and organized: it makes your life feel more organized.

In the spirit of Mother's Day, I want to share with you my Mom-in-a-Rush routine. It takes 10 minutes and relies on two main beauty hacks:

  • products that multitask
  • cream blushes and eyeshadows (no brushes needed!)

Here's the step-by-step:

Step 1: after showering, I spray a facial mist over my face and neck. While the mist is absorbing, I brush my teeth and put in my contact lenses.

Favorite facial mists: Odacite Aloe & Immortelle Hydrating Toner Mist, Josh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator.

Step 2: I apply a multitasking sunscreen that has the benefits of a nutrient-rich serum and a moisturizer. So instead of applying three different products I only need one. If your skin is very dry, or during cold weather, you might still need a moisturizer on top of your sunscreen. But at least you’ll have the serum part covered. Apply the sunscreen under the eyes too. The skin under the eyes is thinner and more susceptible to UV damage. If you need more hydration you can apply the same moisturizer you used on your face to your under eye area.

Favorite multitasking sunscreens: Hynt Beauty Sun Prep SPF 30, Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream SPF 30.

Step 3: While the sunscreen and moisturizer are absorbing, I do my hair. You want to let your skincare products absorb a little before applying makeup to avoid any pilling.

Step 4: Use a foundation or concealer that also works for your under eye area. This way you’re only opening one product. I apply it to my nose where I have large pores, on any red patches, and then under my eyes.

Favorite multitasking foundations: Vapour Atmosphere Luminous Foundation, Kjaer Weis Foundation.

Step 5: there’s no time for contouring with bronzer and highlighter when I’m in a rush. Instead I use a warm blush that gives me a tan-like effect, rather than my usual pink blushes. And always a cream formula that I can apply with my fingers, no brush needed.

Favorite blushes-with-a-hint-of-tan: Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Sun Touched, Ilia Multi-Stick in All of Me.

Step 6: also no time for messing with eyeshadow brushes. I use a cream eyeshadow that I can swipe on with my finger.

Favorite cream eyeshadows: RMS Eye Polish in Solar, Ilia Silken Shadow Stick in In Between Days.

Step 7: mascara. Curl lashes, apply a few coats, remove any clumps with an eyebrow brush. Favorites: Dr Hauschka Volume Mascara in Black, Lily Lolo Black Vegan Mascara.

Step 8: apply a tinted lip balm that gives your lips a natural wash of color and also conditions.

Favorite tinted lip balms: RMS Lip Shine in Honest, Ilia Lip Conditioner in Blossom Lady.

Usually by this point my daughter comes into my bathroom wanting to do her makeup too. She’s four, so I need to stop her from getting things in her eye and lipstick all over her face. Or, one of the kids runs up to me crying because the other has been "mean". But if I’m feeling polished and put together I can handle anything. Almost ;)
